As with many other log-tenured leagues, the Midwest League went through several name changes. From 1947-1948 it was known as the Illinois State League. For the next seven seasons it operated as the Mississippi-Ohio Valley League, until adopting the name Midwest League in 1956. The league was replaced by a reorganized High-A Central in 2021 but was renamed back to the Midwest League ahead of the 2022 season.
