The Southern Association ran from 1901-1961 then disbanded after several years of declining attendance and franchise volatility (and, some say, due to its lingering reluctance to integrate; the league fielded only one Black player during its run, Nat Peeples, and he only played two games). For most of its existence it was two steps below the Majors, the equivalent of today’s Double-A.
